Ottawa lies well south of the line where the ice sheet stopped, so there is no glacial till here. What you have instead is thin soil weathered from Pennsylvanian shale and limestone, and shale-derived clay swells when it gets wet. What is under Ottawa
This is Osage Cuestas country. The landscape is gently stepped, formed by alternating hard limestone and soft shale layers, with the harder rock forming low ridges and the softer shale eroding into the valleys between them. The practical consequence for a homeowner is that bearing conditions change over very short distances. One footing can sit on rock. The next can sit on several feet of weathered shale clay that expands and contracts with the seasons.
Then there is the Marais des Cygnes River, which runs through town, and Tauy Creek. The floodplain along the river is alluvial ground: softer, wetter, and prone to both settlement and basement water.
The combination, shrink-swell clay away from the river and soft alluvium beside it, is why Ottawa gets both heave and settlement, sometimes on the same house.

Most foundation content assumes things go down. On shale-derived clay, things also go up. A footing sitting on soil that swells will lift when that soil takes on water, then drop again when it dries. The housing stock
Ottawa is an old town with a substantial historic core. Ottawa University dates to the 1860s and the downtown along Main Street carries a large stock of nineteenth-century brick and stone commercial buildings, with the residential streets around it holding Victorian and early twentieth century homes.
