The fastest way to get a useful answer
Before you call, spend five minutes doing this. It makes the conversation much better and it costs you nothing.
- Photograph the crack with a tape measure, a ruler or a coin in the frame so we can judge scale.
- Measure the widest point and write it down.
- Mark and date it in pencil at each end of the crack, right on the wall.
- Note the season. Did it get worse after a wet spring or a dry August? Reversible movement and permanent movement are different problems with different fixes.
- Walk outside during a rain and watch where water actually goes. Where it pools, where the downspouts discharge, whether the driveway or patio sends water back toward the house.

Emergencies
Call rather than using the form. If a basement wall has visibly shifted, if water is actively entering the house, or if a floor or structure feels unsafe, get people out of that area first and then call. If you believe there is an immediate risk of collapse, call emergency services first.

Before you hire anyone in Kansas
Kansas has no statewide general contractor license, so verification is local and it falls to you. Inside Topeka, call the city's Development Services Division and confirm a contractor's classification and standing. Ask for the written scope, ask what happens if the ground differs from the assumption, and ask for lien waivers as work is completed. Kansas mechanic's lien law lets unpaid subcontractors and suppliers file against your property even if you have paid the general contractor.
